A lawyer is licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to practice law in all areas without limitations. A paralegal, on the other hand, is also licensed by the Law Society of Ontario but is restricted to specific legal matters within their permitted scope of practice.

Paralegals in Ontario are authorized to represent clients in matters such as: · Small Claims Court (lawsuits up to $35,000.00) · Provincial Offences Court (traffic tickets, by-law infractions, etc.) · Landlord and Tenant Board disputes · Human Rights Tribunal matters · Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) cases · Summary conviction criminal offences (with a penalty of six months or less) · Statutory Benefit Claim. Paralegals cannot represent clients in family law matters, real estate transactions, wills and estates, or criminal matters beyond summary conviction offences with penalties exceeding six months. These areas require representation by a lawyer.

Paralegals are governed by the Law Society of Ontario (LSO). The LSO ensures that all licensed paralegals meet professional and ethical standards, adhere to a code of conduct, and complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours annually to stay up to date on changes in the law.

Paralegal fees vary depending on the complexity of the case and the services required. Our hour rates are $135/ per hour, and we offer flat rate packages for specific services hourly billing or contingency fee-based retainer.
